Taman Ayun

Elegant and extremely photogenic.

Built in 1634, Taman Ayun was used as state temple for the Kingdom of Mengwi before falling into the arms of the neighbouring kingdoms in 1891.

The visit starts with a short stroll in the meticulously maintained gardens. You will particularly appreciate then the extreme fineness of the inner courtyard and its multiple roofs sanctuaries – called “meru”- from the protective wall that surrounds it. This specificity has the benefit of allowing a very pleasant visit despite the crowd, and the chance to take splendid pictures.

Recommended visit duration: 45 minutes.

Rice Terraces of Jatiluwih

Breath-taking panorama.

Jatiluwih centenarian rice fields are registered on the UNESCO world heritage for their beauty and their ingenious irrigation system called “subak” which exists from the 9th century as well as the traditions that surround it.

You will be dazzled by the splendid breath-taking panorama of rice fields that spreads until vanishing point with a large panel of colours that range from the emerald green to yellow ochre depending on the season and the time of the harvest of the different plots. If you wish to do so, you will have the chance to easily stroll around the rice fields using the marked paths.

Recommended visit duration: 30 to 60 minutes.

Luhur Batukaru

Halfway between legends and traditions.

In older times Luhur Batukaru was the state temple of the independent Kingdom of Tabanan. Situated right in the middle of the jungle and nestled on the sides of the eponym summit, it is part of the 9 temples that are meant to be protecting the island from demons. The legend goes that the temples’s protective spirits let thousands of bees loose to scare away Buleleng king’s troops when they attacked it around the year 1605.

You will enjoy the authenticity and the peace of the place, which still remains rather little visited, and measure its spiritual significance for the Balinese who massively come here to meditate. Before leaving, have a quick look at the numerous atypical prohibitions listed at the entrance.

Recommended visit duration: 45 minutes.

Tanah Lot

Spectacular and enchanting.

Tanah Lot, meaning “earth” and “sea”, is nestled high up on a rock and beaten by the waves of the surrounding Indian Ocean. It is a very important pilgrimage site for Hindus and a very popular destination for travellers and photographers.

You will have the chance to get closer to the temple at low tide, without however having the possibility to enter (its access is reserved for believers only). In order to get a fabulous view on this wonder with impressive waves in the background, you will have to move away from the temple and position yourself on the surrounding cliffs.

Recommended visit duration: 60 to 90 minutes.
